Eight of the greatest fillies in the world will take center stage in the final race of the Breeders’ Cup on Friday afternoon in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic. Even though neither Zenyatta nor Rachel Alexandra are running in this 1 1/8 mile run, there is still a huge prize and a ton of bragging rights to the winner of this, Race #8 of the day at Santa Anita.

#7 Music Note may have the other fillies in this field singing the blues. She has run in eight straight G1 races, only one of which she failed to reach the money. She’s two-for-two with jockey Rajiv Maragh on board, winning her L/2 races by an average of almost four lengths against some stiff competition. No, the likes of Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra weren’t in those races, nor were many of the others running in the Classic today, but Music Note should add to her $1.47M in career earnings with a great run at Santa Anita.

There aren’t many fillies in the world that can say that they stood toe-to-toe with Zenyatta, but #4 Lethal Heat’s last race was as good of an effort as any filly has ever run against the undefeated wonder. Lethal Heat has yet to win a race in 2009, but she has competed quite well, cashing six times in seven races. All of her races this year have come at least at the G2 level, which makes her battle-tested. If her October 10th run was any indicator, Lethal Heat could be a lethal choice at 20-1 on the morning line.

#2 Life Is Sweet is the only horse in this field to have had prior success at Santa Anita. Jockey Garret Gomez introduced her to the synthetic surface of the track to start the year in January, and she posted three resounding victories in graded races. Distance won’t be a problem, as she has run successfully as far as 1 1/4. The scariest part about this horse was her most recent run on October 10th, when both Lethal Heat and Cocoa Beach beat her out in the most recent race that Zenyatta won.

Final Analysis: If you believe that the favorite #1 Careless Jewel’s five-race winning streak is a fraud, you can probably find a ton of nice prices on the board in this one. Both #6 Cocoa Beach and #8 Rainbow View could be factors, but the horse between them is the one to watch out for. Look for Music Note to make a big move at the end of this race and capture the Classic.

Some of the biggest jockeys and trainers in the sport are invested in this race, and you should be as well. Here’s who we expect to do well in the Sentient Jet Sprint, Race #7 on the day…

The last time we saw a jockey have a choice of horses to ride on, Calvin Borel chose Rachel Alexandra over Mine That Bird in the Preakness Stakes. He won on the filly that day, while the horse he rode to victory at Churchill Downs finished second. Edgar Prado has a similar choice in the Jet Sprint on Friday, and he is electing to ride #3 Game Face instead of #2 Sara Louise. This horse’s last G1 race was back on July 11th, and he dominated at six furlongs, winning by a stunning 6 3/4 lengths. With four wins to its credit in eight starts in ’09, Game Face is a horse that should be watched closely at 10-1.

Jockey Julien Leparoux has himself one heck of a ride in this race with #7 Informed Decision. The horse has five wins and a show in six starts this year, and has cashed in 12 of his 13 races. The only race in which he failed to cash was won by none other than Game Face, the horse we are going with to win this one. However, Informed Decision has seven victories in his L/8 starts, a record that just cannot be ignored. We still think that Game Face is going to get the better of him, but it’s hard to leave the 5-2 favorite off of the board.

#9 Ventura is a very similar horse that is also a tough one to keep off of the board at 8-5. Veteran jockey Garret Gomez is the only mount that this horse has ever known, and the results have been fantastic. Ventura has nine wins, seven places, and a show in 19 career starts, including two wins at Santa Anita. This is a battle-tested horse, having run in four G1 races this year. However, will the layoff from September hurt him?

Final Analysis: It’s very possible that Informed Decision and Ventura will make up a very bland quinella that will probably pay less than $10. The payoffs will be fantastic if one, or both end up outside of the money, but it’s hard to picture that happening. Still, this will be a triple worth at least three digits the way that we see it, and it’s certainly worth a shot taking Game Face to win, place, and show as well.

After a couple of races for the younger fillies, the Breeders’ Cup will turn to its three-year olds and up in the fourth race of the championship. Eight horses will run 1 1/4 miles on the turf of Santa Anita in this G1 race. The linesmakers had a tough time figuring out this short field, as only two horses have odds longer than 10-1, but we have the answers to who you should be betting on in the Emirates Airline, Race #6 at Santa Anita.

We’ll take our first look at #4 Magical Fantasy, who is the only horse to have success running at Santa Anita in its career. One of the elder statesmen in this race, Magical Fantasy has a win, a place, and a fourth place finish in three races at Santa Anita this year, with its races coming in February, March, and April. His April 18th victory has sparked a four-race winning streak. There is a question about the level of competition that this horse has run up against so far, but with four straight speed ratings in the 110s, it’s hard to ignore just how strong Magical Fantasy really is.

#2 Forever Together is easily the richest horse in this eight-horse field, as he is the only one to top the $2M mark in earnings. His big paydays all came at Saratoga around the one mile distance, but in his only run at 1 1/4 in his career, Forever Together stormed back from behind 3 1/4 lengths to win at the wire, surpassing seven other horses along the way. Traffic clearly won’t be an issue.

Call banking on #1 Visit a bit of a surprise if you wish, but even though has just two wins, four places, and four shows in 16 career starts, he had his best run in his most recent race in October. He lost out by a nose to Magical Fantasy, who is one of the strong horses in this field. That was also the only time in his career that Visit ran at 1 1/4. It’s very possible that jockey John Velazquez, who we are predicting to have a very strong first day of the Championships, could guide him to a shocker in the Emirates.

Final Analysis: We’d like to believe that Visit can steal the whole thing at that we can cash a nice price. Though it’s worth a bet, Magical Fantasy is clearly the horse to beat. A tri-box involving both #4 and #1 may be worthwhile, though it’s hard to ignore the 5-2 favorite as well.

There will be another fillies race immediately following the turf race at Santa Anita on Friday afternoon when a 12-filly field races 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic surface. Barring a shock from one of the long shots, this is legitimately a seven-horse race though, and though prices may not ultimately be fantastic, there certainly is no lack of competition amongst the big girls in this race. Here’s how Race #5 on the card at Santa Anita should shake out…

#3 Blind Luck has already proven that she can run against some of the biggest names in this race, as she outdueled Always a Princess and Bickersons in a very strong field in her last outing. She drew a poor outside post in that race, but should be a much clearer look at the rest of the field from near the rail on Friday. Blind Luck has three wins and a place in her four career outings, and has a win and a place with jockey Tyler Baze aboard. There’s no question about the distance being an issue, as she closed strong on that tough field at this 1 1/16 length back on October 4th. As long as she doesn’t get closed in early, this is going to be the filly to beat at the wire.

Any time you can find a strong trainer/jockey combination, like #7 Devil May Care has, you should take notice. Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez should work well together for this largely untested two-year old, but the lack of experience shouldn’t have you shying away. The 8-1 morning line price is a good one for a horse that is a perfect 2-0 in her starts. She’s never run at this distance, but Pletcher has to know what he’s doing with one of his top fillies. Unlike when you’re dealing with Connie and Michael, Devil May Care is more than likely more than just a one-hit wonder. Look for her to hit the board on Friday.

#10 Negligee is the only horse in the field to earn more than $300,000 for her career, and her fantastic pedigree is probably a good chunk of the reason why. Afleet Alex is in her lineage, as is Northern Afleet and Relaunch. She has already beaten She Be Wild recently, and should be another horse to reckon with on Friday. She’s already proven to be a comfortable starter from the outside, as her three starts (two wins, one place) have all come from the outside.

Final Analysis: If you had to pick a long shot in this race, it would probably be #9 Champagne d’Oro, who has the best pedigree in the race. But it sure looks like this is a chalk race, and as long as #11 Always a Princess doesn’t catch up at the wire, the Grey Goose should belong to Blind Luck.

The second race of the first day of the Breeders’ Cup is for the girls, as a host of two-year old fillies take to the turf at Santa Anita. It’s difficult to parse through this 14-horse field at this mile distance, as many of them appear to have very similar, and very brief histories. However, there as always, there are plenty of chances to cash in, even on such a difficult race, #4 of the day at Santa Anita.

#8 Lillie Langtry was the is the morning-line favorite in this race at 3-1, and deservedly so. The British horse has been simply fantastic in her six career starts, recording three wins, two places, and a show. It is absolutely impossible to keep her out of any of your trifecta boxes in this race, as she is the cream of the crop. The only two questions that are surrounding this horse are how she’ll adapt to a bigger field than she’s used to, and how she’ll take to the full mile. All of her victories were either at six or seven furlongs, but she has been worked up to this point and should be good to go the extra distance.

Speaking of horses that have been worked up to this point, check out #10 Tapitsfly. She started the year running at 4.5 furlongs, and has since increased her distance. As she has stretched herself out, she continues to look better and better. In her L/3 races, all of which were at least seven furlongs in length, she has two wins and a place, all of which came with jockey Robbie Alvarado onboard. At 8-1 on the morning line, this is a fantastic price for Tapitsfly.

Any horse with the famed Seattle Slew in its lineage has to be considered a force to be reckoned with, and that’s part of the reason why #3 Smart Seattle is one of the many horses in that 6-1 to 10-1 range. She has run with several of these horses before, including Hatheer, Tapitsfly, and House of Grace. Smart Seattle has moneyed in all of her races, the final two of which came at 1 1/16 miles. She’s proven to be able to run the distance, and should be a contender the whole way.

Final Analysis: If by chance Lillie Langtry doesn’t turn up in the money, the prices on the board are going to be phenomenal. The payouts may not be fantastic, but it’s hard to ignore how strong this filly really is. Taking the #8 on top with your next two best choices is probably a smart move. In this case, we’ll go with Tapitsfly and Smart Seattle, but this is really an open race beyond the favorite.

The first race of the Breeders’ Cup is the 1 3/4 Breeders Cup Marathon, and it’s a tricky race to handicap because none of these horses have much experience running at this length or on this synthetic surface. The chalk is a scary proposition in this race, as neither #5 Father Time nor #6 Mastery have had much in the way of experience at all. Instead, we’re going to go with experience in Race #3 of the day at Santa Anita in hopes for collecting a great payout.

Even though #3 Nite Light hasn’t won a race with jockey John Velazquez onboard, there is a reason that this horse is a morning-line 4-1 favorite to win this race. In his L/2 outings, he finished second by 1 1/4 lengths in a very tough field at Hawthorne, and won wire-to-wire at 1 1/2, extending the lead the entire way. Nite Light has finished in the money in 12 of his 15 lifetime races and should be on the podium again when the Marathon is said and done barring complications.

#1 Black Astor may be a horse to keep an eye on because he is the only horse with any sort of experience at Santa Anita. He most recently raced here in January, turning in a 5th place performance after leading for the majority of the race. As with most of the horses in this field, the distance is a huge concern, as he has fallen off the pace towards the end of the majority of his races.

It’s hard to ignore a horse that has never lost with its jockey aboard, and that’s why #4 Cloudy’s Knight is a sexy selection. With jockey Rosemary Homeister with the ride, Cloudy’s Knight has won back-to-back races. The only concerns about this horse are its age and its lack of track time since the start of ’08. Even though Cloudy’s Knight has run 38 races in its career, only two of those were in 2009, and only six have been since the outset of ’08. Still, at two wins in two starts in ’09 after no cashes in ’08, this is a horse that could be a force to be reckoned with.

Final Analysis: Trying to figure out the pace in this race is difficult, but regardless, it’s hard to argue with Velazquez aboard one of the stronger horses in this field. Expect to see Nite Light in a solid position for the entire race, and to be one of the only horses with a great kick left at the end.

LHP Cole Hamels hasn’t been nearly as effective in the playoffs this year as he was a year ago for Phillies gambling aficionados, but the defending champs are still 2-1 in his three starts. Hamels hasn’t pitched more than 5.1 innings in four straight starts dating back to the regular season, and he has allowed at least three earned in his L/6 outings overall. Many wondered whether manager Charlie Manuel would even elect to keep the struggling left-hander in his rotation. Barring a strong start tonight against the Yanks, if this series should go to a Game 7, Manuel will likely look elsewhere even though Hamels was the man that did a ton of damage in the playoffs a year ago. For his MLB betting career, the southpaw is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts against the Yanks.

The ‘under’ has now gone 15-3 in New York’s L/18 World Series gambling battles after the Bronx Bombers took Game 2 of the series 3-1. The Phils have still won three of the five MLB betting clashes between these squads this season. This will be the Yanks’ first visit to Citizen’s Bank Ballpark.

Even if the Phillies lose tonight’s Game 2, they have to feel like they really accomplished something by coming into the Bronx and stealing the first game in the World Series gambling affair.

The Yankees simply never stood a chance on Wednesday night against a dominant LHP Cliff Lee. He allowed just one unearned run in the complete game effort. The Bronx Bombers strung together a couple hits and put their only run of the day on the board in the ninth inning of last night’s contest, and will hope to get back on track in Game 2 betting action. Manager Joe Girardi got everything he could ask for out of LHP CC Sabathia in Game 1, as the lefty only allowed two runs in seven frames. RHP AJ Burnett will be hoping for more offensive fireworks than Sabathia got when he takes the hill on Thursday night. Burnett was lit up for six runs in his most recent playoff betting start against the Angels, but he only allowed three earned runs in his previous two starts in the postseason.

The ‘under’ has now gone 11-1-1 in New York’s L/12 home games overall and 14-3 in its L/17 World Series gambling battles. The Phils have now won three of the four MLB betting clashes between these squads this season, with all three wins coming at Yankee Stadium.

As the World Series kicks off, the New York Yankees will play host to the Philadelphia Phillies in a heated World Series betting affair.

The Phillies will trot LHP Cliff Lee to the bump in Game 1 of the World Series. The lefty has had his way in these playoffs, going 2-0 in his three starts with a 0.74 ERA and 0.70 WHIP. Lee, pitching in his first postseason this year, will face the daunting task of stopping a New York lineup that has scored at least four runs in all of its games in the playoffs. However, he has only conceded more than three earned runs in a game once since September 9th, when he was lit up for seven runs in six innings in Milwaukee. For his career, the southpaw has been mediocre at best against these Yanks, going just 4-4 with a 5.02 ERA in nine career starts. All things considered, Lee will need to be fantastic for the Phillies to steal Game 1 of this baseball betting affair, as his bullpen still has a ton of question marks, and any runs that his squad can score against the Yankees will be a real bonus.

Why pose that type of a question for a team that has scored at least four runs in all but one of its playoff games this year? Because LHP CC Sabathia is the man on the other side of the diamond set to duke it out with Lee. The only reason that the lefty is throwing Game 1 of this series is because manager Joe Girardi elected to throw LHP Andy Pettitte instead of his horse in the clinching game of the ALCS. Not to be outdone, Sabathia is a perfect 3-0 in the playoffs with a 1.19 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. However, much like his opponent on Wednesday, New York’s prized left-hander hasn’t had the greatest career in the world against his foe. Sabathia is 1-1 with a 4.35 career ERA against the Phils. This will be his first World Series start. If the Yankees are to be successful in this series, they are probably going to need to get some production from someone aside from 3B Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod is batting over .400 and leads the team in just about every category offensively, but there are five regular starters that are batting below .250, and that won’t get it done against a Philly squad that is knocking the daylights out of the baseball right now.

Dating back to last season, the Phillies are an amazing 18-5 in their L/23 playoff games. Obviously, both teams have been relatively unstoppable so far in these playoffs. The Yankees have yet to lose a game at home in the playoffs, while the Phils have only lost one game on the road. These two teams met once during the regular season, with Philadelphia winning a three game set two games to one in Yankee Stadium in May.
