Most people looked at the Western Conference and said that the conference was owned by the Lakers and Spurs. San Francisco (27-21, 14-14 away) has regained control of the NL West with a strong May after a mediocre opening month. The defending World Series champs were 13-13 going into May but have gone 14-8 ever since.

The Giants had their five-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday with a 5-1 loss to Florida. They followed that up with a 7-6 loss in 12 innings to the Marlins on Wednesday, and they will hope to avoid a sweep in the series finale.

Tim Lincecum (4-4, 2.06 ERA) will take the mound Friday less than a week after his best start of the season. The right-hander pitched a complete game-shutout Saturday in San Francisco’s 3-0 win against Oakland. He allowed just three hits in the outing.

Milwaukee (27-23, 19-6 home) has been baseball’s hottest team over the last two weeks with 13 wins in 16 games. The Brewers have been even more dominant at Miller Park, where they have won nine consecutive home games.

Home field advantage didn’t matter much for the Brewers the last time they hosted the Giants. Milwaukee was outscored 36-7 in a four-game sweep at Miller Park Jul. 5-8, 2010.

Shaun Marcum (6-1, 2.37 ERA) will look for his fourth win in as many starts Friday for Milwaukee. The right-hander has not lost since his first start of the season on Apr. 2. Since then, he has won a career-best six straight decisions.

Boston trailed Montreal 0-2 in the first round before eventually winning in seven games. Oakland (22-26, 11-14 away) enters Tuesday having lost its last six in a row. The Athletics have scored just 10 runs and batted .200 over that stretch. They lost the series opener to L.A. 4-1 on Monday in what was the fifth straight game in which an A’s starting pitcher allowed only one run, and none of those ended with a win.

The Athletics will hope to provide Wednesday’s starter, Trevor Cahill (6-1, 1.79 ERA) with more run support. The right-hander, who has the second-best ERA in the AL, was on the mound for one of Oakland’s aforementioned losses in which the starting pitcher allowed one run. He gave up one hit and one run in six innings Friday in a 2-1 loss to San Francisco.

Los Angeles (25-24, 12-11 home) has won its last two games to move within one-half game of first place in the AL West. The Angels struggled offensively for much of the series opener on Monday before breaking a 1-1 tie with a three-run rally in the eighth inning to go on to a 4-1 win. Torii Hunter had two doubles and is batting .467 with six RBIs in his last four games after hitting .042 with one RBI in his previous seven.

Ervin Santana (2-4, 4.18 ERA) will start Wednesday for the Angles. The right-hander pitched a complete game shutout Friday in L.A.’s 9-0 win against Atlanta on Friday. He allowed four hits and struck out seven in the win.

Much of the success for the Royals can be attributed to their dominant play at home. They are 16-11 at home this season, compared to a 5-11 road record. The good news for the Royals is that they will play at home against the Cardinals. The Cardinals are a solid road team, winning 12 of their 22 road games to this point in the season

On Sunday we will get a chance to see one of the best young pitchers in the Major Leagues in Jaime Garcia. Garcia put up solid numbers in his rookie season for the Cardinals, but he has been dominant to this point in the season. Jackson is a former Dodger that was seen as a future ace. While he has shown flashes of potential, he has never developed into the pitcher that most people thought he would be. While he is not as dominant as he should have been, he still does have the ability to take over a game when he is at his best.

Kuroda is fresh off of a brilliant performance in his last start and it looks like he is going to put together a solid season for the Dodgers. Both Cleveland (26-14, 15-4 home) and Cincinnati (25-18, 10-8 away) are division-leaders. Travis Wood (3-3, 5.01 ERA) will go for his third win in as many starts for the Reds. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in three starts in May.
