Golf Betting: Handicapping the 2009 US Open

By Adam Markowitz • Jun 17th, 2009 • Category: GOLF

The US Open will kick off on Thursday morning from the hallowed black course at Bethpage in Farmingdale, New York. The first tee time is at 7:00 AM. Television coverage can be found on both NBC and the ESPN family of networks, but JustBet Sportsbook is your home for all of your golf betting needs!

Here’s a look at a few of the names to watch for this weekend…

Tiger Woods (+195): Any time you’re discussing golf betting, the name, Tiger Woods has to be the first one to roll off of your tongue. The 33-year old phenom is probably already on the short list of the greatest golfers of all-time, and he’ll be looking to add a fourth US Open title to his credit this weekend. Not only is he the defending champion of this tournament after winning at Torrey Pines last year, but he conquered Bethpage Black in 2002, the second of his three Open titles. Woods was out of action for eight months following last year’s US Open, but he reminded the world just how dominant of a golfer he is by winning that tournament with essentially only the use of one leg. He’s back and ready for more, and it’s going to be hard to place a US Open bet against him.

Padraig Harrington (+4000): Perhaps it’s hard to call a guy who won seemingly almost every major event that Tiger Woods didn’t win over the L/2 years a “sleeper pick,” but these are some real nice odds on Padraig Harrington. Yes, he has struggled this year, missing three of his L/4 cuts and only having two Top-25 finishes all season, but it’s hard to forget about how well he has played in Majors past. He won the British Open in both 2007 and 2008, but also won the PGA Championship in ’08. Unfortunately for golf bettors who plan on backing the Irishman, his recent form is lousy, at best. He has missed three of his L/4 cuts, and hasn’t finished a tournament under par since the Houston Open in the beginning of April. This will be Harrington’s 12th US Open appearance, with his best career finishes coming in 5th place (2000, 2006).

Sean O’Hair (+5500): Sean O’Hair may be the best American golfer that you’ve never heard of, but he’s certainly got the potential to be hanging around near the top of the leaderboard all week at Bethpage Black. This is only his third career appearance at the US Open, and he has never fared well in the tournament. He withdrew from his last outing at The Memorial, but leading up to that point, O’Hair was on fire. He had three straight Top-10 finishes from the end of April through the middle of May, including a win at the Quail Hollow Championship with one Tiger Woods breathing down his neck on the final day of the tournament. Without a doubt, the youngster won’t be bothered by the presence of that red shirt that Tiger wears on the Sunday of every event. O’Hair has finished in the Top-25 in every event that he has made the cut in this year, a very impressive statistic for a man who has only missed two cuts (and had one withdrawal) in 13 events on the season.
