British Open heads into Rounds 3 and 4
By Hank Harris • Jul 17th, 2010 • Category: GOLFA windy second day at the British Open blew out the surprise first-round leader – and blew in an even more surprising second-day leader.
Play was stopped for 66 minutes on Friday at St. Andrews due to gusty conditions, which sent scores into stratosphere leaving only five players under par for the second round.
Louis Oosthuizen, of South Africa, shot a five-under 67 to finish the first two days at the Old Course at 12-under-par 132, giving him a five-stroke lead over veteran Mark Calcavecchia, who also shot 67 and won the British Open back in 1989.
JustBet will have updated British Open Betting Odds throughout the weekend. Third- and fourth-round play on Saturday and Sunday will be covered by both ABC and ESPN.
First-round leader Rory McIlroy, 21, of Northern Ireland, had a stellar opening day but came back to earth with an eight-over 80 through 16 holes of his second round.
McIlory, No. 9 in World Golf Rankings, had pretty much a polar-opposite day on Thursday when he shot a nine-under 63 in the opening round to take the lead. In doing so, he became just the second golfer to post the score in a major championship at St. Andrews.
Defending Open champ Stewart Cink shot a two-under 70 with three birdies and a bogey in the opening round. The legendary Tom Watson, who Cink beat in a playoff last year at Turnberry, shot a one-over 73, and John Daly, the 1995 Open champion at St. Andrews, had a stellar opening round and shared second place with Andrew Coltart.
World No. 1 Tiger Woods was strong with a five-under 67 but had not yet teed off Friday.
