The Pittsburgh Panthers better be on upset alert when they hit the road for the first time this season to battle the Buffalo Bulls in a Saturday afternoon CFB betting battle. HC Dave Wannstedt’s Panthers currently sit as 10.5-point road favorites while the game ‘total’ has been set at 46.5.
Pittsburgh rock and rolled its way to a 38-3 win over Youngstown State last week, and made those that tagged them the BE favorites look good for just one week. Frosh RB Dion Lewis set a school record for most yards gained by a freshman in a season opener with 129. QB Bill Stull went 11 of 16 for 123 yards with 2 TDs, but also threw a pick. The defense limited Youngstown State to a measly 159 yards, and shut the ground game down almost completely.
Even with the Bulls best player, RB James Starks, unavailable to run for Buffalo this season, the Bulls still came out victorious in their cross country trek to UTEP last week. RB’s Brandon Thermilus and Mario Henry combined to tote the rock 36 times for 134 yards with a pair of TDs, and QB Zach Maynard took his spot as QB1 for the departed Drew Willy and ran with it (12/19 for 159 yards & 1 TD).
As good as Buffalo looked last week in El Paso, they’re going up against a team so much more athletic than the Miners. They managed to win a game without RB Starks, but he will be sorely missed in this spot. Because of the Bulls lack of a ground game here, QB Maynard will struggle. Turner Gill can coach, there’s no doubt, but he’ll have a hard time getting things done against what should be a fully attentive Pitt squad after they lost to another MAC team last year (Bowling Green). The Panthers are 7-3 ATS their L/10 on the road, while Buffalo is 1-4 ATS its L/5 at home.
Selection: Pittsburgh Panthers (-10.5)
