College Football Bowl Games: FedEx Orange Bowl
By Chico Rodriguez • Jan 5th, 2010 • Category: NCAAFOrange Bowl: Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (8:10 pm ET, FOX)
College Football Odds: Yellow Jackets -5, Over/Under 50.5
The Hawkeyes had an unbelievable start to the season, going 9-0 with a win over two of the Top 4 teams in the Big 10, a 21-10 win @ Penn State and a 20-10 win @ Wisconsin. This was all after not being picked anywhere close to the pre-season Top 25. Iowa just found ways to win, and while it wasn’t always pretty, the Hawkeyes were right in every single game they played.
The Hawkeyes went into their tilt against Northwestern just one win away from a 10-0 record and a shot at Ohio State. But their starting QB, Richard Stanzi, went down early in their bout with the Wildcats, and they lost by a touchdown. But they didn’t give up, the Hawkeyes continued to play awesome football, but lost in overtime by a field goal @ Ohio State.
The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish behind a few teams in an ACC that was filled with Top 25 pre-season teams. Clemson, Virginia Tech, Florida State, and then Miami just a couple weeks into the season. But the Yellow Jackets finished atop the ACC after a 10-win regular season, then beat Clemson in the Conference Finals for a BCS Bowl Bid.
The Yellow Jackets beat a very good Clemson defense twice this season, and while Clemson might not be as good as Iowa defensively, they are close. The Yellow Jackets put up 69 points in two games against that stout Tiger defense, but they gave up a lot too, 61 to be exact. This game could come down to Iowa’s offense, and if the unit is good enough to keep up with the Yellow Jackets run game.
This game opened with the Yellow Jackets as a 2.5-point favorite, it’s now moved to 5.5 in many books. 62% of the bet is on the favored Jackets.
