College Football Season Preview: Texas Tech

By Hank Harris • Aug 25th, 2010 • Category: NCAAF

It has been a crazy offseason for the Red Raiders football team of Texas Tech. Mike Leach, who was largely responsible for Texas Tech’s transformation into a national powerhouse, had to be let go as head coach after his alleged mistreatment of a player.  Former Ole Miss and Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has been brought in to replace Leach, and he has promised to keep the winning tradition alive in Lubbock.

College Football Lines at Just Bet have the Red Raiders at +1200 to win the Big 12 Conference, and at +7500 to capture the BCS National Championship.

At quarterback, Tuberville will get to choose between seniors Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield.  Both came out of spring practices with injuries, however, and the starting job may be in the air right up until their season opener on September 5.

Whoever gets the nod at quarterback will have a variety of weapons to work with.  Texas Tech boasts one of the best receiving corps in the nation with four receivers who caught at least 45 passes last season.  Alex Torres (67 receptions) and Detron Lewis (65 receptions) have a chance to make up the Big 12’s best receiving duo.

While high scoring has become a staple of Red Raiders football in recent years, new defensive coordinator James Willis hopes his team can be a suffocating defensive team.  He will have plenty of weapons to work with as he institutes the 3-4 formation.  Six of the top eight tacklers from last season will be returning.

It won’t take long to figure out what kind of team Texas Tech is.  They play their conference opener against rival Texas in Lubbock on September 18.  Tuberville has already gained the acceptance of Red Raider fans – a tough task considering they had ten successful seasons under Leach.  In order for him to stay in good graces with the fans, however, he needs to deliver on his promises to keep them in the National Championship hunt.
