NCAA College Football 2010 Preview: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

By Chico Rodriguez • Aug 14th, 2010 • Category: NCAAF

It appears the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team has nowhere to go but up going into the 2010 season.  Given the way they played in 2009, the Yellow Jackets will be playing with the highest of expectations resting on their shoulders.

The Yellow Jackets are at +1000 moneyline odds to win the ACC Conference, and +6000 to win the BCS National Championship, in College Football Futures at JustBet.

Coach Paul Johnson led his team to win their first outright conference championship since 1990.  The two-time reigning ACC Coach of the Year is 20-7 since joining the team.  The Yellow Jackets are retaining six offensive starters and eight defensive starters.

Johnson’s spread option offense resulted in Georgia Tech being second in the nation in rushing offense with 295.4 yards per game and third in the country with a whopping 33:49 average time of possession.  Their offense should be as good (if not better) with third-year starting quarterback Joshua Nesbitt leading the way.

The Yellow Jackets lost running back Jonathan Dwyer to the NFL after last season.  That means more carries for junior Anthony Allen, a big play threat who averaged 9.7 yards per carry last season as an A-back.

Georgia Tech allowed 30 points or more six times last year, and as a result coach Johnson brought in a new defensive coordinator.  Al Groh, formerly head coach of Virginia, will be Tech’s new defensive coordinator.  He has already made big changes, switching the defensive formation from a 4-3 setup to a 3-4.

With Nesbitt positioned to have a great season, Georgia Tech appears to have a legitimate chance of repeating as ACC champs.  They play in a loaded ACC Coastal division with Miami (FL), Virginia Tech, and North Carolina, so it will be anything but easy for them to do so.
