NFL Season Preview: New England Patriots
By Chico Rodriguez • Jul 29th, 2010 • Category: NFLNFL Season Preview: New England Patriots
The New England Patriots were a very dominant team in many ways last season. They outscored their opponents by 142 points and did not drop a single game on their home field all season. Nobody is questioning whether or not the Patriots will be a tough team at home this season though, the question is whether or not they will be able to get it done on the road this year.
The Patriots are supposed to be a veteran team with the savvy necessary to carry them through the tough times during the season. Unfortunately that savvy failed them to some extent last year as they were an awful 2-6 on the road in 2009.
Outside of their issues in losing games on the road, the Patriots have other questions surrounding them. One of the biggest questions is age. In certain positions it seems that when players hit a certain age they start to loss effectiveness.
To this point Randy Moss has been stellar. He has been fast and agile despite his 13 seasons in the league. There has to be questions however as to when the season will come where Randy Moss does not have the breakaway speed to roast defenders. Alge Crumpler is likewise hitting the twilight of his career. He will be a solid option but maybe not a go-to tight end like he was during the days of Michael Vick in Atlanta.
The New England Patriots will probably be alright, but these concerns of age are something to watch for as the season rolls on. The Patriots will still have a stellar defense and they are as well coached as anyone. The only question is if the players that they have relied on in years past will be as durable as they need to be to bring success to New England.
New England opens the 2010 NFL season at home against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 12.
The Patriots are a 6-point favorite and the over/under total is 43 in NFL Betting at JustBet.
