NFL Season Preview: Seattle Seahawks
By Chico Rodriguez • Sep 7th, 2010 • Category: NFLWill some of that USC Trojan magic rub off on the Seattle Seahawks this season? For the Seahawks’ sake, they’d better hope so.
Seattle suffered a disappointing season in 2009 and things don’t appear to be improving in 2010, despite the presence of former Trojan coach Pete Carroll.
The Seahawks’ dismal outlook is reflected in the fact they are at +5300 to win Super Bowl XLV in NFL Futures at JustBet, which puts them among the longshots.
The other teams in the division are either coming off of a good season or are looking to improve. Meanwhile, the Seahawks biggest move has been in the coaching staff, and their hopes will rest in Carroll.
Carroll is known as an offensive genius and he will need to make magic happen in Seattle if they hope to compete this year. The offense only managed to score 280 points last season. That is the 5th lowest total in the NFC and the only team in the NFC West with a lower total was St. Louis.
Not only did the team struggle on offense last season, but defensively as well. The team surrendered 390 points last year. They struggled to a 5-11 record and were outscored by 110 points on the season.
The Seahawks will have the anchor of Lofa Tatupu on defense. Tatupu has played for Carroll in the past and he will be a key factor in helping the team to rally around the concepts that the coach has to share with the Seahawks in 2010.
Matt Hasselbeck is two years removed from his last solid season with the team and is only getting older as time goes on. He will be a big question mark for the Seahawks entering into the season. If he cannot produce better numbers than he has the last two seasons, the Seahawks will be fighting in 2010 to stay out of last place in their division.
