Canadiens force Game 7 against Capitals

The Montreal Canadiens staved off elimination Monday and now face the Washington Capitals in the deciding Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series Wednesday at the Verizon Center (7:05 pm ET, Versus).

And the Canadiens can thank goaltender Jaroslav Halak, who made 53 saves to lead the Habs to a 4-1 win in Game 6 of the best-of-seven series at the Bell Centre.

Montreal won as a +175 home underdog and the score stayed under the over/under total of 6.

Michael Cammalleri led the offensive charge with two first-period goals, while Maxim Lapierre provided some insurance in the third period and Tomas Plekanec’s empty-net goal sealed the win for the eighth-seeded Canadiens.

Montreal is attempting to come all the way back after being down 3-1, which would mark just the second time in team history the team has erased a 3-1 series deficit and come back to win.

The only blemish against Halak was Eric Fehr’s goal with 4:50 left in regulation.

Semyon Varlamov started his fourth straight game after relieving Jose Theodore during Game 2. He stopped 18 of 22 shots.

The Capitals are a huge favorite in Game 7 at -330 moneyline odds in NHL Betting at JustBet. The over/under total is 6.

The teams are dead even over the past 10 meetings, each going 5-3-0-2.

Monday’s game was the second-straight in which Cammalleri opened the scoring, and marked the first time in the series the home team has scored the first goal.

Montreal had lost its last six playoff home games, and hadn’t won as the host since Game 1 of the 2008 Eastern Conference semifinals against the Philadelphia Flyers.
